The media plays an imperative role especially in increasing public awareness on issues where the masses may have little or no knowledge. Based on this premise, Penplusbytes with support from Ghana Oil and Gas for Inclusive Growth (GOGIG) is hosting news editors of major media organisations in Ghana at a workshop from 20th to 22nd October at Koforidua.

The event forms part of Penplusbytes’ “Enhancing the Role of the Media in Promoting Oil and Gas Sector Transparency and Accountability” project, which is premised on building the capacity of the media to headline issues arising from the oil and gas sector since Ghana started producing oil in commercial quantities.

Ten vanguard journalists were early on trained as part of project activities and news editors of these journalists are being oriented on the need to headline oil and gas issues in Ghana’s media to promote accountability and transparency in the sector.

The editors would be deliberating on how to effectively improve media and public oversight on oil and gas resources and revenue management. It will also provide an opportunity to address trending issues affecting the sector and devise pathways of getting the media to contribute to the national drive towards good governance of the sector.

Selected Editors from the Business and Financial Times, EIB Network, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Multimedia Group, Graphic Communication Group among others will be present at this workshop.

The Executive Director of Penplusbytes. Kwami Ahiabenu II reiterated Penplusbytes’ ultimate goal of promoting effective governance of the country’s natural resources using technology. “News editors are key persons in the media landscape and so to achieve the goal of headlining oil and gas issues under this project, we need to engage them thoroughly.”

The “Enhancing the Role of the Media in Promoting Oil and Gas Sector Transparency and Accountability” project, seeks to create more awareness and demystify issues pertaining to the oil and gas sector while amplifying citizens voices on oil and gas issues through media engagement and dialogue.
